"Memories of My Melancholy Whores" is a comedy, drama, and romance film directed by Carlsen Henning, co-written by Jean-Claude Carrière and Carlsen Henning, and starring Emilio Echevarría, Geraldine Leigh Chaplin , among others. Co-produced by Mexico, Spain, Denmark, and the United States in 2012, the film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Gabriel García Márquez , whose creative inspiration originated from Kawabata Yasunari 's "The House of the Sleeping Beauties". Presented in Spanish, the film employs a dual narrative structure interweaving an old journalist's recollections to depict both an awakening of emotions and a retrospective journey into the past.
The film tells the story of a ninety-year-old journalist who, to celebrate his birthday, commissions a madam to arrange a night with a 14-year-old comatose virgin. Gradually developing an emotional dependence through one-sided gazing, this encounter triggers his recollections of his own past romantic adventures. The young girl, Delgatina, works in a factory by day and sleeps at night, available for the old man's observation, while she secretly watches him when he sleeps. The budding mutual affection is forcibly interrupted by a murder at the brothel, after which the old man embarks on a journey to find her.
